Baker Sieg
From hobby to business
In the picturesque Bedum we find Sigrid Sneep (43), proud owner of Bakkertje Sieg . What started as a love for baking on her children's birthdays, grew into a successful business. "During corona time a friend said to me: you really have to do something with your hobby," says Sigrid. “I bought a refrigerator via Marktplaats, started an Instagram account and launched a Mother's Day campaign. That went like a train right away!”
Balance between family, work and passion
Sigrid runs her bakery in the middle of her family of five children (20, 18, 15, 12 and 8 years old) and combines this with her job in the financial sector. "Finding a balance is always a challenge," she admits. "It's so much fun that saying no is not easy!" Still, she enjoys her work immensely. "My baking days start with taking the children to school and getting the ingredients. During the day I make the base and in the evening I calmly do the decoration. It can be late hours, but when the cakes are picked up the next morning, it gives me a satisfied feeling."
Bridal orders: stressful and special
When asked what her greatest achievement is, Sigrid answers without hesitation: "The bridal orders. It's so special to be a part of someone's big day." However, it also brings tension. "The transport and making sure everything arrives perfectly on location is really stressful. Let me try out recipes in my own kitchen!"
Calm styles and vintage trends
Sigrid's style is characterized by a calm appearance. "I don't make huge theme cakes, that doesn't suit me. I do like vintage cakes, I think they are beautiful." She gets her inspiration from big names like Cakes by Courtney , but also from fellow bakers like Mieke Bakt and Chez Mariette .
Cakes with a story
The most precious cake Sigrid ever made was a cake in honor of a little boy who passed away. "Cakes with a story are the most beautiful," she says. That's what makes her work special: the emotions and memories her creations evoke.
Social media as a growth platform
Thanks to Instagram, Sigrid is able to expand her clientele. “I get a lot of requests via Instagram, it is really important for my business.”
Dreams and challenges
In the future, Sigrid hopes to open her own shop, where customers can not only buy cookies and cakes, but also follow workshops. For now, her challenge remains to balance her family, work and passion. “The support of my family is indispensable,” she adds proudly.
Tips for Beginner Bakers
For those who are just starting their baking career, Sigrid has valuable tips:
- Practice a lot and share sample batches with friends and family.
- Always taste your ingredients before you use them. "I once used spoiled whipped cream in a cake under time pressure. That won't happen to me again!"
- Make your cake nice and smooth by warming the buttercream a little before the last round of spreading.
Sturdy and stylish packaging
The presentation of her cakes is at least as important as the taste. "Packaging must be sturdy and have a beautiful appearance," emphasizes Sigrid. That makes her products not only tasty, but also a feast for the eyes.
A baker with passion
With her creativity, perseverance and eye for detail, Sigrid has made Bakkertje Sieg a success. And the best reward? "A customer who burst into tears when she saw a cake, she thought it was so beautiful!"
