Cake Frame

With the Dasbi Cake Frame you build a tiered cake around one central dowel, so the tiers do not shift, even on the way to the venue. A base frame consists of a round MDF cake board with a wooden dowel; the tiers above go on cake boards with a hole, which you slide over the dowel.

How does the Cake Frame work?

1. Put the dowel into the bottom board. The dowel is deliberately slightly wider than the hole, so it sits tightly; if needed, tap it carefully into the board with a rubber mallet. The video with the photos shows how.
2. Measure the total height of your cake and cut the dowel slightly shorter with cutting pliers.
3. Wrap the dowel in cling film, or slide a tube over it that is suitable for contact with food. The dowel is made of pine wood and is not intended for direct contact with food.
4. Place each next tier on a cake board with a hole and slide it over the dowel.
5. Also put supports in each tier, such as dowels or sturdy straws. The central dowel keeps the tiers in place but does not carry them.

Which base frame should you choose?

Base 1 is a Ø 250 mm board, 6 mm thick, with a 300 mm dowel. Base 2 and Base 3 are 9 mm boards, Ø 300 or 350 mm, with a 500 mm dowel; Base 2 is also available with a black edge (Base 2A). Dasbi recommends 6 mm for a two-tier cake and 9 mm for three or more tiers. For transport, Base 1 fits the 25 x 25 x 35 cm tall cake box and Base 2 the 30 x 30 x 35 cm tall cake box.

Can the cake sit directly on the board?

Yes, the bottom tier can sit directly on the varnished top of the board. According to the Dasbi technical data sheet, the varnish is suitable for dry, moist, acidic and fatty foods. The edge, the underside and the dowel are not intended for contact with food, so always wrap the dowel.

Material, food contact and disposal

The board is made of MDF with a white finish; the top is coated with a food contact varnish. According to the Dasbi declaration, the sum of lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium in the MDF, varnish and dyes of the cake boards is below 100 mg/kg. The dowel is made of pine wood; wood is not toxic but it is porous, and therefore not intended for direct contact with food. In the Netherlands, put the board and dowel in the residual waste after use, not with waste paper or organic waste.

Are the cake boards with a hole included?

No. A base frame consists of 1 board and 1 dowel. The cake boards with a hole for the tiers above are ordered separately, in packs of 10 per size.

Can I reuse the Cake Frame?

No, the board is intended for single use, so you simply hand the Cake Frame over with the cake.

Can the Cake Frame go in the fridge?

Yes. The board is intended for use at room temperature or colder. Do not place a warm cake on it and do not use it in the oven, microwave or dishwasher.

How do I dispose of the Cake Frame?

In the Netherlands, MDF and wood do not go with waste paper or organic waste. Put the board and dowel in the residual waste. Elsewhere, follow your local rules.
